White Flower Farm- RPG Programmer

White Flower Farm in Torrington, Connecticut is seeking a full-time, salaried and benefited RPG Programmer. The RPG Programmer is an onsite position with remote flexibility per manager after the completion of job training.

Under direction of the IT Operations Director, the programmer will work individually and as part of a team to build new applications and to enhance existing applications through the full development lifecycle of analyze, design, develop, test and support. Responsibilities include working with legacy applications built in RPG on an IBMi/AS400/iSeries. Additionally, assists in the planning, implementation, testing and deployment of integrations with outside vendors. Performs operational tasks such as executing backups and file transfers and assists users with program or database related problems. Imports and exports various data files to in-house and external databases.

Essential Responsibilities:

Existing/New Programming

  • Maintain and update programs as required.
  • Provide support for production applications and integrations including on-call after hours support as needed.
  • Conduct program reviews to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Perform analysis to ensure changes to one area are fully consistent with the entire system.
  • Execute program changes and updates from concept through deployment. Complete projects within set timelines.
  • Draft and maintain consistent technical documentation to support programming code.
  • Prepare documentation of systems and user applications, providing instruction and training to users as needed.
  • Keep pace with business trends, standards, and best practices in area of expertise, contributing to continuous improvement for the department and overall.

Database management, reporting and modeling

  • Perform seasonal data migrations to current and historical files.
  • Carry out miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned such as on-demand ad-hoc report generation and database hygiene.
  • Provide support to WFF marketing efforts for customer reporting and catalog circulation.
  • Assist various teams with importing and exporting data to update the database or to provide data for analysis.

Operational Support

  • Work with 3rd party software tools and vendors to install and configure the system as needed.
  • Create and maintain system user accounts.
  • Perform system IPLs, and work with backup tape system.
  • Participate in maintaining connectivity with database dependent hardware and third-party integrations.

  • Ability to exercise strong judgment in appraising, evaluating, and solving technical problems.
  • Strong customer centric consideration for both internal and external customers.
  • Inquisitive, possessing the ability to understand and implement innovative technology and work within a complex technical environment.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) years Information Technology development experience as a programmer.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience developing with RPG III, RPGIV, ILE, and the IBMi/AS400/iSeries.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar applications.
  • Experience working with third party vendors.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours during certain projects and to be on-call for after hour support as needed.
