Read Aloud, a program of the Northwest Connecticut Chamber’s Education Foundation, stresses the importance of reading to elementary school children in our part of the state. Normally held in February, the Read Aloud program is entering its twenty-eighth successful year.
Utilizing corporate sponsorship, Read Aloud provides funding to purchase books that are selected by a group of library media specialists and language arts consultants from local schools. Community volunteers are recruited to visit elementary classrooms in the Northwest Corner. Volunteers read the books aloud to the students and then leave the books as a gift to the classroom library.
The program, initiated under the sponsorship of SNET, has been a tremendously fulfilling experience for many people.
Read Aloud Day is currently sponsored by the Draper Foundation Fund, a fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation.
